Compression Therapy in NYC

Improve your blood flow, reduce swelling, and ease discomfort with Compression Therapy using the Flowell Pneumatic Compression Device. This advanced therapy is now available at FemFirstHealth, under the supervision of our Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

Whether you're navigating swelling, chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema, lipedema, or simply looking to recover faster from activity, compression therapy promotes lymphatic drainage to restore balance and ease in your body.

What Is Compression Therapy?

The Flowell device is a medical-grade machine designed to support lymphatic drainage, blood circulation, and fluid reduction in the limbs.

Flowell is a pneumatic compression device that uses a sequence of inflatable chambers (or compression sleeves) to apply pressure in rhythmic cycles to the legs. This sequential compression mimics the natural movement of muscle contractions and lymphatic pumping to:

  • Stimulate lymph flow

  • Enhance venous return

  • Reduce swelling

  • Support the removal of metabolic waste

  • Prevent blood clots and promote healing

This type of compression therapy is commonly known as a sequential compression device (SCD) or intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). It is a great adjunct to wearing compression stockings or compression bandages.

Who Is This For?

Compression therapy is ideal for anyone experiencing:

  • Pregnancy-related swelling

  • Postpartum swelling and heaviness

  • Leg lymphedema (post-cancer, post-surgical, or primary)

  • Lipedema (especially for heaviness and discomfort in the legs)

  • Chronic venous insufficiency or venous leg ulcers

  • Poor leg circulation

  • General swelling or fluid retention in the legs

  • Athletes looking to speed up muscle recovery and reduce soreness

Whether you're recovering from childbirth, cancer treatment, or training, compression therapy can help you feel lighter, more mobile, and better supported.

What are the Compression Therapy Benefits?

  • Reduces swelling and heaviness in the limbs

  • Improves circulation and lymphatic flow

  • Eases discomfort, tension, and fatigue

  • Speeds up recovery after exercise

  • Supports healing after surgery or childbirth

  • Encourages relaxation and stress relief

You're not just receiving a treatment; you're receiving expert care tailored to your unique needs.

What to Expect During Your Session

Each compression therapy session is about 45 minutes total, including time for setup, positioning, and post-treatment support. You'll spend approximately 30 minutes in the pneumatic compression pump receiving active treatment.

The session takes place in a calm, private setting. You’ll be comfortably reclined with sleeves placed on your legs. Once the pump begins its gentle, rhythmic cycles, you can simply relax. Many of our clients take this time to unwind, meditate, or even nap.

What Does a Compression Pump Feel Like?

Using a compression pump for legs is a soothing and comfortable experience; many people describe it as feeling like a gentle, rhythmic massage.

Once the compression sleeves are applied to your legs, the machine begins to inflate and deflate in a slow, wave-like sequence, starting from the feet and gradually moving upward toward the thighs. This mimics your body's natural muscle movements, encouraging lymphatic drainage and blood flow.

You might notice:

  • A light, firm squeeze that gradually increases and releases

  • A calming, pulsing sensation as pressure moves up your legs

  • A sense of relief as swelling and heaviness begin to ease

Most people find it deeply relaxing. There's no pain involved, and the pressure is adjustable to ensure your comfort at all times.
